Dear EUSEM members, dear friends, dear colleagues,
2020 was a complicated year for all of us, bringing sadness and putting lots of stress on our healthcare systems. We healthcare workers, working in Emergency and Acute Care settings, were particularly hit. Many of us lost family members and beloved ones. Nevertheless, we believed that in the midst of a pandemic, there was a pressing need to access updated medical information. That’s why we were one of the few scientific societies to hold our annual European congress, although virtually, in a year where travel and social gatherings were severely curtailed.
We had hoped for better days in 2021, but unfortunately, the situation is not much better than it was last year: When we see what is happening in India and Brazil at the time that I’m writing you this address, we can’t but be worried about the evolution of this pandemic. Nevertheless, and for this year, we have decided to put all our efforts to make this event happen. We’ve chosen to gather in Lisbon, in a hybrid format, confident that with the massive ongoing vaccination campaign, we will be able to travel safely and meet in person in October.
This hybrid format will ensure that everyone, everywhere, will be able to attend the congress and interact live with friends and speakers. By either coming to Lisbon or connecting remotely, all of you will follow this amazing program that our organizing and Scientific committees have put in place. I can’t thank them enough for their creativity and hard work to ensure that this edition will be an unforgettable experience to all of us. I’m also grateful to the outstanding speakers that accepted our invitation. We are looking forward to meeting them, interacting with them in Lisbon, and listening to their high-quality talks. Also many thanks to our supporters from the industry that believe in EUSEM and in our hybrid format, despite these difficult moments.
Last but not least, I want to thank you all for joining! I’m sure this edition will be a very special one: it will allow us to connect again with friends and colleagues and share the latest in science and medicine. Enjoy the congress, enjoy Lisbon!
Looking forward to seeing you all!
