A group of international experts met to discuss treatments against poisoning

Vaudreuil, 20 November 2019 - Ethylene Glycol, baclofen, pregabalin, and amanita mushrooms

are some of the poisons present at the heart of discussions when the Montérégie hosts the 2nd EXTRIP (ExtraCorporeal Poisoning Treatment in Workgroup) conference, which runs until November 22 and is comprised of forty experts.

This event is a platform that allows experts in nephrology, clinical toxicology, critical care, pharmacy and methodology from around the world to discuss if hemodialysis can enhance the removal of certain poisons. Hemodialysis and other methods of extracorporeal removal can be then be considered as a possible solution in several poisonings.

EUSEM is represented in this collaboration by Kurt Anseeuw, Chair of EUSEM's Toxicology section.

Evidence is limited on the subject and the EXTRIP group has been interested and working for several years. This research group has undertaken various studies to investigate the current state of knowledge to promote the progress, agree on indications for the use of hemodialysis and other similar methods to treat poisoning with various substances and try to establish global consensus.

Can hemodialysis be considered as treatment against certain toxins? At what moment? How? These are questions which participants in this conference will attempt to answer in the coming days.

The executive committee of the international research group is notably composed of Dr. Marc Ghannoum, nephrologist at the Verdun Hospital and founder of EXTRIP Workgroup; Dr. Sophie Gosselin, Head of Department and emergency medicine specialist at Charles Lemoyne Hospital, researcher of the ERC CISSSMC and medical toxicologist for the Poison Center; and Dr. Valery Lavergne CIUSSS of the Research Center of the North of the island of Montreal, co-founder.
